Gurley Cemetery-2005

Gurley Cemetery

Nestled in the hills and forest of John Gurley's original 1830’s farm sits Gurley Cemetery. Originally a private cemetery, maintained by the Gurley/Hall Family. With the earliest known gravesite dating back to 1831,  it is the final resting place for the Town Founder Frank B. Gurley and many of Gurley’s earliest residents. Including Pioneers, Doctors, Lawyers, Tradesman, Farmers, and Politicians. Adorned with beautiful headstones and monuments the cemetery has always been open for other families to bury their departed. Gurley Cemetery tells the story of every family that has built and contributed to the growth of the town. In this cemetery lies veterans of every major American conflict. From the American Revolution and onward Gurley residents have always answered when their country called. Here we come to honor and remember those members of our community we loved and cherished. The only cemetery within the town limits, it has always been maintained by the town. However, the cemetery did not become official property of the town until 2019. Before this purchase, members of the community would have to purchase plots for burial from the descendants of the Gurley family. The Gurley Cemetery was placed on the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register by the Alabama Historical Commission on April 11th, 2007.

For information regarding the purchase of plots or burial services please contact Gurley Town Hall (256-776-3313) or visit our office at 235 Walker Street, Gurley AL. Our hours of operation are from 8:00am-4:30pm Mon-Fri.
